Boogie Matrix Mechanism - Track/Mix/Master/Co-Produce Full CD 2023 in the Davis Building.
Brian Bell - lead vocals, Johnny K - lead - guitar + lead vocals, Ben Durham - Bass guitar and back vocals, Bob Maltby - rhythm and lead guitar,
Eric Lowden - drum set, Aaron Armstrong - percussion, Jim Kahmann - keyboard. : I have expertly tweaked all my great production tricks over the last 10 years in a new mixing and mastering that matches everything pro streaming online. Great big sublows, 3D image beyond speakers, punchy and warm, clear but not harsh to hear all the details. Great drum sounds in the room with the right mics as usual. Slightly more on the live side, with a hippy jam band. They practiced for 3 days and then just played it all live, including percussion, but not solos. They really nailed the performance, as usual. I also got super lucky because Dave Mariasy and Ken Zeurcher really tweaked the acoustics of this live room over 10 years!!
I've recorded 3 studio CDs and 4 live recordings for online since their first CD called Glass Candy 2006. Now 5 live recordings because I recorded the New Years Eve Bash 2023 at Kip's bar The Prime Nightlife on Secor and Monroe.
PLEASE check these mixes with your projects online!

I just created a new live mixing and mastering sound for this performance, that sounds even more live and "in the room". And thanks to Boogie for really nailing the performance! As always. I had to put more of my mics in the correct place and thanks to Jim at IMIJ for the live sound set up help. This really came in to play for all of the extra percussion. Total Goosebumps! This is my 5th time doing New Years.

We're Not Scared
Jam band with 2 drummers on drum sets live in the studio: Jon Roth – vocals, guitar singer/songwriter, Roman Meyer – vocals and guitar, Bryan Quigley – keys, Usen Jackson – drums, Aaron Ziegler – drums, Bryan Sigs Sigrist – upright bass stick thing – Track/Mix/Master/Co-Produce full CD at Holland location.
One of my best full band live in the studio with only overdubs of vocals, not instruments. We mixed the room mics down a little to make it sound more polished, not live. I spent quite a bit of time coming up up with a way for the 2 drum sets sit just a little stereo from each other, but not get strange. Both kicks work. Great stereo image of drums in the room that feel like they extend beyond the speakers. Lows great with bass and 2 kicks tight with compression. Guitars clear, not harsh. Vocals right on top.
I also did the 2016 album "This Song is about you!". Check it out on streaming. That was tracked at a different space so it sounds different without all of my great mic placement on drums and in my room. But I put my patented mixing and mastering tricks to get close.

Vissi d’arte REMIX! - 2003An EDM remix of Giacomo Puccini opera Tosca soprano aria “Vissi d’arte” starring Jodi Jobuck — soprano with pit orchestra, gospel choir, ballet dancers, modern dancers, tap dancers at Owens Center for Fine and Performing Arts building grand opening. Composing, arranging, producing, studio recording, live recording, live sound mixing with 15 wireless lavs, then final mixing and mastering. We used the English words, so when it screams out to the lord, I thought it would be cool to have a gospel choir singing those words when I slowed the beat down.
My most complex production. Commissioned by Dr. Brian D. Bethune (2003) the school director at Owens. I was inspired by Quincey & Sonance remix of U2’s “Beautiful Day” and Influx remix of “Elevation” on the U2 7 EP (2002). |
Millennium Media Group Of America: Virgilio Baker and Myrtle Sparks did the video, I did the audio. Shot in my studio space with lights. The artist is Markese Roberts AKA "Microphone Romeo" with FlyHigh Entertainment. I wanted this to feel more "live" so I had him sing through my Bose speakers and mic them.
NIKKI D and the Browns
We Made It - Live on video in my studio!
Nikki needed a demo, so this is what I came up with. They did 2 takes on 7 songs. I wanted to create a more live but polished sound. My drums sound great here still and he really hit them perfect. I had to place many room mics. They really nailed it, so that helps. No overdubs. Great lows on bass guitar, punchy kick + snare, 3D live room beyond the speakers. I personally prefer a more live sound instead of the overproduced dead sound! SO add more room mics.
The Palatinos - "Stray Cat" live in the studio with 6 cameras.
David Winfree is an American singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and talkbox artist. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Winfree has collaborated with artists from all around the globe including those from France, Japan, Ireland, Chile, the Philippines, and more. A talkbox is usually an effects pedal that sits on the floor and contains a speaker attached with an airtight connection to a plastic tube. Dave uses the Yamaha DX100 like Roger and Zapp in "More Bounce To The Ounce"
Winfree’s big break came in 2002, when he wrote a song that was recorded by R&B Icon, Keith Sweat, titled, “One On One,” for his “Rebirth” album. The single “One on One” reached No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 44 on the Hot R&B/Hip- Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
I recorded the original version of that song for a band called Lade Bac – For All The Ladies CD in 2000.
The band hired Keith Sweat’s producer from Atlanta Alex Nesmith AKA Al E. Cat. Singers are always looking out for hit songs! I've been recording Dave since 95.
David Winfree newest CD – Supernova Full CD 2020 – Featuring Kevin Prettyman, Tony Ray, Sovan, The Breakfast Club, Mane Course. Tracked, mixed mastered and co-produced by me at his home with some of my gear over a year.
– See his videos here:
David Winfree's newest song in 2022 is "Infrared Light". He is going in an EDM dance direction. He shot his video in my studio!
I recorded 3 of Methrone's CDs over the years, but he lives in Florida so I don't get to record him as much. He is working with Dave Winfree again with the Talkbox, so he decided to shoot his 2023 videos at my studio. He's married to the rapper Sinamin, so she came too. A lot of fun seeing them again!

I am hired by Markey's Audio Visual Company, so I was chief sound engineer and lights for this event. In the brand new, east side, Toledo Middlegrounds Metropark's Pavilion with the Mayor! It was ESPN Top Ranked Boxing live press conference of Jared Anderson, "The Real Big Baby" for the 4th of July weekend 2023.

Ghost Podcast by Chris StollI created this ghost podcast from scratch. I found the book from Margaret MacDonald in the library, I picked the copy, found the voice over person, recorded the voice, composed the music and sound effects to fit the copy and then mixed and mastered it all to sound great over the internet.
Jeff Burns the guitarist of Brown Maple taught some guitar lessons here. So the band did their video here. Lots's of fun. Just the video shot here, I did not record the audio, it was already recorded when I met him. |
I copied this MAD MAX movie preview from YouTube and replaced ALL of the audio including all sound effects and voices. 75 stereo tracks in all. Includes separate musical instrument stems for modern HD mixing. I know how to enhance and control the low end while keeping the highs from getting harsh with regular AND dynamic EQ! I know how to stack and layer SFXs to get that 3D image beyond the speakers. I went in a more surreal vibe with this one. All music, sound effects, voices, recording, mixing and mastering. It fits perfectly with all other movie previews on YouTube!
Best super produced rock song demo: “Save Me”
by Matt Schmidt - acoustic guitar, heavy guitar, light guitar, solo guitar, Bob Davenport - big drums and production, Charles Thaxton/Char-el - just bought new awesome Mellotron M4000D - white keys, Carmen Miller - great local vocals that gives you chills as she belts it. This was remastered for the new streaming so it matches. More of a produced sound, not as live. At Holland location.

Best christian band demo: "We Bow Down"
by Jesse A Duckworth = J Anthony and Megan Davis - lead vocals, with drummer and producer Cledell King, Kenny K bass Diggs - bass, Hamilton Hardi - Keys, Younger Jackson - guitar, Michel Day - guitar. 4 stacks on all of the 20 vocal harmony parts to get that super produced sound, 2 live 8 pc drum sets, 10 loops. On this song, the snare is turned off for effect. This matches all of the modern christian mixes online. At Holland location.

Although I did record 100's of university concerts to make a living during undergrad and grad school, I got to perfect my live to YouTube in the last 10 years at Owens Community College as chief live sound engineer and doing very complex musicals with 50 live mics. I used 12 mics on the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra to mix in solo artist, boost quiet instrument sections that should be louder or create a more 3D feel like movie music soundtracks. And then hired to record random performances at churches, like this one. I know what mics to put where first, and then use my new mastering tricks for great modern sound that doesn't sound like the old days. I will never do classical recordings with just 2 mics like I did at WGTE for the 3 years of recording the Toledo Symphony in the Toledo of Arts' Peristyle Theater. 6 mics on piano, 6 on the artist, and 6 crowd mics. Because this church has so much reverb, it was critical to get the mics right. They wanted to keep the piano more darker in line with other classical YouTube videos.
Best Punk Band - Beer by Blackeye (Dave Smith, Carl Herkimer II, Steve Irb, Ian Fox) - 15 Year Vacation — original punk band with one “famous” cover of Star Wars “Imperial March” - Track/Mix/Master/Co-Produce at Holland Location - Although this was to be a polished CD sound, I wanted it more live drums with many room mics and my modern mastering tricks. In your face but not harsh, like the Foo Fighters. 2 stacks of every guitar.
Crystal Bowersox recorded at least 15 songs with me over about 10 years which included the "Holy Toledo" song that was on the radio in 2010. She also recorded 20 other songs with Frank May to demo to the producers of American Idol. I Remastered some of the songs for fun for modern streaming that we didn't think of then. Trying to use my modern production tricks to make it fit. They played it live with only about 2 takes per songs. Then only adding backing vocals. I love Frank's bass playing a lot and that is why I spent 3 years drumming Monday Nights at the Village Idiot with Bobby May and then 3 years with Ben Barefoot and the Hand Shakes when their drummer left.
I was playing drums with Frankie May and Ben Barefoot of The Hand Shakes at that time. So we would be at the bar gigging and following American Idol on the TVs there. Here we are at the Village Idiot December 2010. Crystal Bowersox, Frankie May, Ben Barefoot and me Chris Stoll…and her ex, Brian Walker.

Here is one of my best singer songwriters that I tracked, mixed, mastered, co-produced AND played drums! Pics of session in the gallery. I prefer to have my drums more live like I hear them in the room, then overproduced separate and dry. I did 20 takes of each drum part to come up with the patterns that fit the song the best when mixing etc. but I didn't put on the grid, which I don't love. I would rather have it a little sloppy to the grid, as long as the instruments fit together with the groove. We did play to a click. I prefer more of the played high hat and ride in there, then just the kick and snare loud, like many pop recordings. But I'm a drummer so. I love Frank's more complex playing like a jam band.
